Friday Fictioneers time again. Here is my take on the photo prompt below:

Weeping willows grew along one bank of the river. Their boughs drooped low; their leaves skimmed the surface of the water, sending ripples across to the opposite bank. Here grew stands of bamboo. Their tall canes vied with one another for the life-giving light above.
But to what avail? Men came and plundered them. They severed the tallest and healthiest canes and hauled them away.
The weeping willows commiserated with the bamboo.
‘What a miserable fate awaits you.’
‘No,’ replied the bamboo. ‘Our sacrifice delivers much happiness.’
